8 Ways to Be Creative with Bookshelves

If you’re like me and have too many books to keep count of (not including the digital versions on your kindle) then you can certainly appreciate a good bookcase! I’ve seen many really good ones, one of my favourites has to be the very rustic wood bookcase at the Food Barn at Noordhoek Farm Village. I love the thick planks and worn wood – seems to match well-loved books well!

About 2 years ago my husband and I put together a custom bookshelf cum TV cabinet cum CD display case by simply using raw wood planks, a few brackets to hold everything up and 2 brackets attached to the wall. The beauty of it though was that we were able to dismantle the whole thing and bring all the wood with us to our new home when we moved a few months ago! So while we haven’t reinvented our bookcase, we have big plans for it (in its disassembled state in the garage!)

Anyway here are some really fantastic creative bookshelf ideas, from under-the-stairs to in-the-ceiling to round-about…there’s plenty of ways to get your dream reading on 😉

My Motivation to Buy a Kindle…

I’ve been a reader my whole life. In fact, it’s reached nerd status and notoriety too. It all began in sub B (grade 2) when I read the entire Bobbsy Twins series and got about half way with Nancy Drew’s earlier adventures (prior to the vastly updated and cooler Nancy Drew Files). I then moved onto Willard Price’s Adventure Series and proceeded to devour everything that had been stamped with Enid Blyton’s cool scribble.

It all followed in quick succession as I became a preteen: The Babysitter’s Club, Sweet Valley Twins (and later, Sweet Valley High and Sweet Valley University), Thoroughbred (my obligatory 11year old horse obsession), Sweet Dreams (I cringe) and Fearless. I’ve loved series to the absolute utmost and own and have read the Harry Potter series around 20 times (each book). Followed by Ken Follet’s epic masterpieces of Pillars of the Earth and The World Without End, I have also owned and read multiple times the Spud series, the Millennium series (The Girl), the Twilight series and the Hunger Games.

You know when people watch series? Well I read them. And so – for this very reason (and so that I don’t have to lug a bag of 10 books when I go away in December) I am getting a Kindle. Hoohah.

Beautiful & Creative Bookcases | Display & Store

I love books, always have, always will. I collect them like little treasures, read them over and over again and share the best ones with my Book Club. Granted, they haven’t taken to a few of the ‘different’ ones like I thought they might (Shades of Grey, The Host), but still – they get my best 🙂

However, since I got married, we’ve delayed for various reasons, in getting or building a bookcase that can house my constantly growing collection. At the moment my books are in clear plastic boxes, on a side table, next to my bed piled on the floor, on my bedside table and in my drawer! They need the love and cherishment of a good-looking bookcase, so that’s what today’s post on The Good Girls Guide is all about – beautiful bookcases in which to display and store… enjoy!
