Summer Home Inspiration – Bakoven Beach Bungalow

Today it is officially 32 degrees in Cape Town, which officially means that Summer has arrived! Very excited to start hitting the beach, sun-tanning, wearing cute shorts & skirts, staying outside longer in the evenings and just soaking up the happy vibes 🙂

To celebrate the start of November (already, I can hardly believe it!) and the lovely weather, I have found some amazing beach decor inspiration with this amazing home right on Bakoven beach in Cape Town. Beach Bungalow is classic beach style: long lazy wooden decks, crisp white wooded floors and open rafters, and of course – beautiful beach views.

Some ideas for incorporating a bit of ‘beach style’ into your house this summer: collect drift wood or simply get some old pieces of wood from a woodcutter, paint white and give a quick sand and arrange artfully on a dresser or hang on the wall; collect shells, drill holes in them and string them up in your bathroom or outside on your patio or porch; bring in a nautical theme with some recovered stripey cushions, curtains or kitchenwear in red, white and navy.

Have a super BEACH inspired weekend! x

Summer, Smoothies & Yuppiechef LOVE!

I am feeling SUMMER in the air! Wandering down Kloof Street at lunch time today I was accosted by singing birds, whistling painters, cute pastel & lace outfits, open-toed shoes and brilliant rays of sunshine beaming down onto people & cars. Plus, Table Mountain looked pretty amazing.

Made me long for a smoothie! Good thing that Kauai is just a few steps away to meet my craving, but got me to thinking that I need to pull out my stick blender & smoothie maker that have both been hiding away for most of winter.

Speaking of smoothies, I got this great email from YUPPICHEF today (one of the best I tell you) with a link to a great post on smoothie making – here are some of the instructions on how to use the Morphy Richards Food Fusion Stick Blender by Lisa the editor of Spatula Magazine, plus a super delicious banana & berry layered smoothie – just in time for summer!

Ingredients (for two smoothies)

For the bottom layer:
1/2 cup yoghurt
1 ripe banana
1 Tbsp honey
Pinch of cinnamon

For the top layer:
10 strawberries
3/4 cup blueberries
1/2 cup yoghurt

Tip: use frozen berries for a super-chilled smoothie.

Method

1. First make your bottom layer. Add the bananas, yoghurt, cinnamon and honey and blitz with the stick blender.
2. Pour the smoothie into a glass and wash out the measuring jug so you can start afresh with your top layer ingredients. Your bottom layer needs to be the heavier of the two. You can put the first layer into the freezer for approximately 10 minutes as this will allow it to set a little.

3. Now blitz together the second layer ingredients.
4. Gently pour or spoon the top layer over the first and serve with a sprig of mint and some fresh blueberries.

Enjoy.

Fifty Shades of Pastel – Summer 2012’s Favourite Milkshake Blend

Oh how we love new trends! Sometimes it’s just nice to look at them on the runway or through the pages of glossy fashion magazines; sometimes it’s nice to see the trends come through as functional/wearable clothes in our department stores, and to wander through the rows of gorgeous threads, running our hands over the fabrics; but it’s the BEST when we find an on-trend item that fits, that works with clothes from last year and makes you look good.

Those trends we like 🙂

As a kid my mom dressed me in a fair share of pastel colours, but I don’t think I ever really warmed to the baby blues and bubblegum pinks – I preferred bolder or darker colours in general. But SUDDENLY mint, teal, lemon, peach and lilac are taking over the fashion world – and hey baby, pastels are back in.

The Trend is Pastel

Here are some tips from Modalu about Summer 2012’s latest trend:

“SS12 sees the fashion world awash with a palette of light-infused summer pastels. An air of sugary-sweet innocence is in abundance as cool creamy mint, vanilla nude and shark grey dominate the season.

Keep this candy-coloured look chic by focusing on key neutral colours and popping in an unusual pastel shade such as mint.”

Ready, steady, go! Bring the girls to the milkshake barn.

Summer Makeup Inspiration | Colour Spectrum

As I type this, it’s raining outside. Granted, it’s not cold, but it’s still not quite summer! Hence today’s post on The Good Girls Guide! Dedicated to the ggeous colours, trends and inspiration of summer, I bring you some lovely Summer makeup inspiration – keeping it light, glowing, colourful and bold 🙂

Personally I think with a bit of a tan, pale pink & peach looks great on lips, while eyes can be bright and well defined – leave the heavy black liner at the bottom of your makeup bag. Mix it all with a bronzer, or glittery blush and you’ll look gorge 🙂 Happy Summer lovely ladies! xxx

Sunshine in the Home: Summer Celebration

Today Cape Town is awash with colour, light and fragrance – it’s undeniably the beginning of Summer. While 1 September went by with a classic downpour and 17degree weather, Spring has finally arrived and everyone’s out in cute outfits, smiles and drinking smoothies!

To celebrate the start of our gorgeous Summer season, I’ve put together a yellow-sunshine-inspired blog post entitled: Sunshine in the Home! Bring the light in with bigger windows (or better placed ones), brighter, lighter colours, flowers and open doors! No reason why Winter has to remain indoors when outdoors looks so HOT. THat’s why I love DIY and easy-to-update decor: you can do it in a heartbeat, and all it requires is a good idea and some inspiration.

Celebrate the start of Summer with me! Happy days 🙂
