Overcoming Small Bathroom Dilemmas | GUEST POST

Today I’m introducing Guest Blogger Roberta Madison, who works for GlassTileStore.com as Marketing Manager, and writes in the home construction, renovation and restoration industry. She loves exchanging and sharing ideas with others and believes there is always a way to make one’s abode more beautiful! I AGREE! Today’s fantastic blog post is about how to make the most of your small bathroom space – something many of us battle with… Thanks Roberta!

Don’t we all sometimes wish that we have one of those opulent bathrooms? You know the type; they are the breath taking bathrooms that get featured on lifestyle and interior decorating magazines. Demonstrating clever design, luxury, and space large enough to fit a whole soccer team; the bathrooms of the fabulously famous and wealthy seem unattainable for us ordinary folks.

However, despair no more because there’s a quick recipe in achieving that grand, dream bathroom of yours – even with limited space.

Reduce clutter

Start by clearing out sinks and anything that obstructs the view. The trick to creating an illusion of space is to have a solid and uniformed look. This can be done by removing unnecessary elements such as unused bottles and other knick-knacks.

Get rid of cabinets

This is in line with reducing clutter; you can’t remove the toilet, the shower, the sink, and/or the tub but you can free up prime floor and wall area by getting rid of bulky cabinets and moving them to where they won’t hinder movement or disrupt the line of view.

Use a light color theme

If a major overhaul seems too costly, then get those paintbrushes ready. A paint job is always the most affordable and easiest way to revamp dull space. To open the bathroom, opt for light or neutral colors. White is usually the best choice as it reflects light, making the room appear larger.

Let the Light In

Remove the shutters and let the sunshine in. Cliché as this may sound but glorious beams of sunshine can definitely improve one’s mood. A bathroom washed with sunbeams is a fantastic way to greet the day.  If the bathroom has no access to natural light, then consider installing wall scones. Add large sized mirrors as well, as any reflective surface helps in cheering up dark and small spaces.

Think glass tiles

If a single sheet is adorable enough, then imagine what several sheets can add to your bathroom? If you are aiming for a hint of indulgence, use glass tiles to accent walls. For a truly impressive look, subway glass tiles in the shower area complete the look of an inviting and welcoming bathroom. The wonderful thing about glass tiles is that you will be hitting two birds with one stone. They are great as decorative tools and can also serve a practical purpose as they can establish an atmosphere as they reflect and interact with the room’s available light.

There you have it. You may not own a posh Beverly Hills mansion or have an Oscar statuette on your mantle but you can have a splendid, inviting bathroom. Thanks to strategically placed mirrors, smart choice of colours, and well-placed glass tiles – even a small bathroom can be worthy of a page on a lifestyle magazine.

Stylish Laundry & Utility Room Inspiration

Hello everyone! Apologies for the very long wait between blog posts – we have some exciting news in that we have a little bun in the oven due next year 🙂 So all very happy about that, but it’s certainly made me have a look at our house and what we need in terms of space, furniture and a whole lot more. So I took one look at our little laundry area and decided, something has to happen here!

Just been doing some searching for a few good ideas on Pinterest and Houzz.com, and found some cool inspiration – check out the space savers, pretty colours and organisation of these laundry rooms, mud rooms and multi-functional spaces. I want!

8 Ways to Be Creative with Bookshelves

If you’re like me and have too many books to keep count of (not including the digital versions on your kindle) then you can certainly appreciate a good bookcase! I’ve seen many really good ones, one of my favourites has to be the very rustic wood bookcase at the Food Barn at Noordhoek Farm Village. I love the thick planks and worn wood – seems to match well-loved books well!

About 2 years ago my husband and I put together a custom bookshelf cum TV cabinet cum CD display case by simply using raw wood planks, a few brackets to hold everything up and 2 brackets attached to the wall. The beauty of it though was that we were able to dismantle the whole thing and bring all the wood with us to our new home when we moved a few months ago! So while we haven’t reinvented our bookcase, we have big plans for it (in its disassembled state in the garage!)

Anyway here are some really fantastic creative bookshelf ideas, from under-the-stairs to in-the-ceiling to round-about…there’s plenty of ways to get your dream reading on 😉

New York City Inspired Office Space | Hello Monday!

I’ve always loved VISI magazine – the quirky design pieces, unique homes and style ideas are really innovative and original, always a place for inspiration! And I’ve ALWAYS loved New York City – it’s one of my favourite places and I’m aching to go back and show it off to my husband… so when I found this post on VISI, I just had to re-share it.

Megan Fasanelli of Meg Vaun Interiors was featured in the magazine and asked by her client to turn a bland boring office into an inspirational space that reflected the trendy and quirky elements of New York. And she did! Love the colour combinations of black, white and yellow – really showcasing the yellow taxis so prevalent in the city – and the clever lighting, wallpapering and reupholstered furniture just adds a classic touch. Enjoy the pics!

Beautiful WorkStations | Creative Spaces to Work, Plan & Think

If you work from home, have a desk you work from on the weekends or evenings, or simply enjoy having your own space to think, create, plan and graft from – then this post from The Good Girls Guide is definitely for you!

A workstation that calls you to it rather than frightens you off is a good workstation – so throw away your unorganised filing system, sell your outdated oversized computer monitor and invest in a good desk, some great storage and a pinboard or something for inspiration.

The best desks are often those with a clear, uncluttered surface; just your computer and what you’re working on should grace your desktop. A pinboard or moodboard is also an excellent way of displaying your ideas, photos and diagrams in what can only be described as ordered chaos.

Make sure your workstation is in a quiet area in your house: a spare bedroom, a little nook somewhere or even pulled out of your cupboard! Remember to keep yourself happy with what gets you into work-mode: the smell of coffee, soft jazz music in the background, the tinkle of a chime…

And then, it’s down to work! Check out our top inspirational workstations to keep your mind ticking, your heart happy and your soul alive:

Amazing Clothes Storage Ideas | Turn Messy into Pretty

Close your eyes and imagine: a spacious, walk-in closet with display for your hundreds of shoes, and colour coded hanging space, all framed with a gorgeous dressing table and twinkle-lit mirror.

And pop goes the dream. Quite frankly, my cupboard is shared with my husband; yes we have our own side, but still! It gets cramped, messy and quite often I find his socks with my underwear, or my coat with his rugby jackets. Not ideal.

The Good Girls Guide has uncovered some beau (meaning: simply marvelous, clever & beautiful) ideas on how to prettily display your gorgeous clothes, shoes, bags and more – but still keeping it neat, under wraps and of course – easily accessible.

So while you may have to settle for a refurbished vintage wardrobe (although I wouldn’t even call that settling, it sounds bloody damn amazing) and keep your walk-in closet for your big-time dreams one day, it does mean you can do it in style and be the envy of all your girls.

Time to turn Messy into Pretty with clever clothing storage ideas:
