Hi, everyone. It’s Joanna here from Arcadian Home blog, a fantastic place to find lots of interior design inspiration for using decorative accessories and an array of light fixtures from fabulous mini pendant lighting to ornate wall sconces. I’m so happy to be guest posting on The Good Girls Guide. How did I get here with a blog post about South African style?

This little adventure began simply enough when I was doing some online research about country bathrooms. Up popped a “contemporary meets colonial” article on Elle Decor with a lovely eclectic bath. However, what really caught my attention was the wonderful backyard of the featured home. Read on to see how that image sent me on a mission to learn about beautiful South African architecture and interiors. Please enjoy!

South African Style

This home in Sonoma County, California not South Africa, is what started it all. The caption under this photo over at Elle Decor reads simply, “the rear facade, which was inspired by the Cape Dutch farmhouses of South Africa.” I love the look and was immediately off to discover all I could about this previously unexplored style.

South African Style

Then I discovered the website for Morrells Farmhouse in Johannesburg and knew I just had to learn more about South African style. This is what dining outdoors looks like at Morrells. I love the wonderfully appealing country table décor that includes rustic charger plates and elegant glass dome food covers.

South African Style

I’ve fallen for this beautiful great room. It’s apparently an example of what’s called Karoo farmhouse style. Kimberley writes about her love of the Karoo here.

South African Style

What a wonderful eclectic mix of old and new, rustic and contemporary! It’s time to learn more about this intriguing country and its interior styles.

South African Style

It seems adding a few fun contemporary touches to very traditional rooms has become a charming part of South African interior design.

South African Style

I’m totally captivated by the living room in South African furniture designer Haldane Martin’s home. The focal point of this space is one of Haldane’s lovely lighting designs—a modern pendant light covered in exquisite feathers.

Near Cape Town, this open and airy coastal cottage offers a homey and inviting dining space with a fantastic sea view.

Another Cape Town beauty dressed in white is right on the beach and feels as if it could sail away on a dream with its wonderful canvas canopied deck.

Summer Home Inspiration – Bakoven Beach Bungalow

Today it is officially 32 degrees in Cape Town, which officially means that Summer has arrived! Very excited to start hitting the beach, sun-tanning, wearing cute shorts & skirts, staying outside longer in the evenings and just soaking up the happy vibes 🙂

To celebrate the start of November (already, I can hardly believe it!) and the lovely weather, I have found some amazing beach decor inspiration with this amazing home right on Bakoven beach in Cape Town. Beach Bungalow is classic beach style: long lazy wooden decks, crisp white wooded floors and open rafters, and of course – beautiful beach views.

Some ideas for incorporating a bit of ‘beach style’ into your house this summer: collect drift wood or simply get some old pieces of wood from a woodcutter, paint white and give a quick sand and arrange artfully on a dresser or hang on the wall; collect shells, drill holes in them and string them up in your bathroom or outside on your patio or porch; bring in a nautical theme with some recovered stripey cushions, curtains or kitchenwear in red, white and navy.

Have a super BEACH inspired weekend! x

Back From the Bush – Luxury Safari Style!

My husband and I just got back from Kruger & the Sabi Sands on the weekend, after spending a week up in the lowveld, in the park and in the sands enjoying some of South Africa’s most luxurious safari lodges and tented camps, as well as SUPERB game-viewing. Apart from the wildlife, the heat and the luxury, I always am so interested in the style & decor of the lodges, really capturing a specific type of feel that is consistent throughout.

Safari Style at Tinga Narina

We stayed at Cybele Forest Lodge near White River in the Panorama Route regions, really beautiful lodge well known for their food, excellent walks and pretty garden scenery; Tinga Narina Lodge, a fantastic 5 star game lodge in a private concession on the border of the Sabi Sands and close to Skukuza Camp; Hamiltons Tented Camp, situated south of Satara Camp in its own private concession and reliving the age-old classic colonial safari; and Elephant Plains Game Lodge, a really comfortable and welcoming safari lodge in the heart of the Sabi Sands – South Africa’s most prolific wildlife destination.

Here are some pics of the lodges, just to give you a taste! All to do with the incredible decor, style and feel:

The Spa House – Places to Stay…

Set on the hillside of Hout Bay in Cape Town is the most gorgeous villa I have seen in ages! The Spa House is a recent design award winner for incorporating the environment, and is a beautiful celebration of light, space and tranquil living… (plus it has a spa, did I mention?)

I’m a bit of a sucker for gorgeous homes and decor, and this amazing villa is really one of those outstanding places to stay in Cape Town – of which there are many. But, seriously, imagine having your own spa, steam room and sauna? amazeballs.

Here are some pics to be whisked away by…
